I catch myself as soon as I begin running, looking at the time to see how long it's been. That's when I get discouraged the most. Seriously, Lord? I've really only been running TWO minutes....it seems like TEN at least! I also find myself looking down at the ground a lot. I'm not the most graceful person and in my clumsiness, I've been known to trip over my own feet. It was then this morning that the Lord told me to look up. "Stop focusing on the things that might trip you up, Beth, and start looking ahead. Better yet, "look up" to Me!"
God speaks this to you and I in our every day walk, too. Stop allowing the bumps in the road, the struggles, the trials, the things and people that rub you the wrong way, the job you hate, the affliction you're enduring, or the situation you're in to be your focus. HE wants to be our focus, and nothing or no one else. Oh, how this perspective changes our hearts!
Psalm 119 says that He is both the "Lamp for our feet"-the immediate step we take, but He is also the "Light for our path"- He, our Truth, lights the way ahead so we can see far enough to know what direction to go. The focus isn't the immediate step, or even how far ahead the journey is. The focus is Him. He is doing the work. He is enabling, guiding, and strengthening our steps in this adventure of life.
I am not sure I will ever say that I LOVE running, but I do love how God uses this thing I don't like to teach me more about His faithfulness and bring encouragement to my heart. I'll be keeping a "heads up" to hear from Him more.
"So if you're serious about living this new resurrection life with Christ, act like it. Pursue the things over which Christ presides. Don't shuffle along, eyes to the ground absorbed with the things right in front of you. Look up, and be alert to what is going on around Christ- that's where the action is. See things from His perspective." Colossians 3:1-2 (MSG)
